Rodando nos States! :: Trippin´ in the States! Cheers!!

Depois do Natal e Ano Novo viajamos eu e a Andreea a trabalho para os EUA por um mês - duas semanas em Washington, D.C. e outras duas em New York...realmente estressante!

O objetivo era fazer alguns treinamentos e finalmente encontrar nossos chefes, as pessoas que nos entrevistaram por telefone para as vagas. Nosso chefe mais direto é um australiano descendente de albaneses que trabalha em New York, e o chefe dele (o da última entrevista) é um inglês descendente de indianos que trabalha em Washington...por isso lá foram os trainees, um brasileiro e uma romena que trabalham na Bélgica!

O único museu que visitei foi o Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, SENSACIONAL!! Praticamente tudo sobre aviação comercial, militar e exploração espacial, dos tempos da Guerra Fria e da Corrida Espacial com os russos até as modernas estações orbitais internacionais de hoje.
Por que "praticamente" e não "totalmente"?? NENHUMA MENÇÃO A SANTOS DUMONT E AO 14-BIS!!! Lamentável...na verdade os Irmãos Wright realmente voaram antes, mas o "avião" deles era praticamente um planador, precisava de uma catapulta para decolar...Anyway, o museu é DUCARAIO e vale muito a pena!! Outro ponto: o museu abre todos os dias e é DE GRAÇA.

E claro que rolaram tb várias baladinhas...descobri pelo Orkut que um amigo meu estava fazendo mestrado em DC, ou seja, parceria garantida pras nights de quinta, sexta e sábado!! Fotos??? Melhor nem...

Depois de DC.....NEW YORK!!! Cidade linda, bombante, cheia de gente, todas as culturas num lugar só...vários preconceitos que eu tinha com relação aos americanos caíram por terra, tanto em NY como em Dc também.

O Smithsonian Air and Space Museum de Washington foi show, mas não resistir e fui visitar outro em NY, dessa vez o Intrepid Air and Space Museum. O Intrepid é um porta-aviões aposentado e ancorado no rio Hudson, hoje transformado em museu. Serviu na II Guerra (resistido a 4 ataques kamikaze), no Vietnam e na Guerra do Golfo.

E pra fechar NY, uma visita ao prédio da ONU. Algumas infos: o terreno onde ela fica é uma área internacional, eles tiram as bandeiras dos mastros depois das 5:30pm (por isso a foto tá sem as bandeiras...), e na parte gastos mundias fiquei sabendo de alguns números (custos anuais em bilhões de dólares):

- remoção de minas terrestres ($2);
- erradicação do analfabetismo ($5);
- manutenção da democracia ($2);
- ajuda a refugiados ($5);
- manutenção da camada de ozônio ($5);
- eliminação do desmatamento ($7);
- eliminação das armas nucleares ($7);

- prover água limpa e saudável ($10);
- controle populacional ($10,5);
- erradicação da fome e subnutrição ($19);
- abrigos e moradia ($21);
- controle da AIDS ($21);
- prevenção da erosão do solo ($27);
- perdão da dívida dos países em desenvolvimento ($30);
- prover energia limpa ($50);
- gastos militares e com armamentos.....$780!!!!!!!

Isso mesmo, US$ 780.000.000.000,00, SETECENTOS E OITENTA BILHÕES DE DÓLARES POR ANO gastos em ARMAS!!
Estima-se que esse número pode superar UM TRILHÃO (US$ 1.000.000.000.000,00) em alguns anos...imaginem se esse dinheiro estivesse na mão de organizações que lutam pela paz como a AIESEC, ou se gente com a nossa mentalidade estivesse no comando...fiquei super empolgado de ver todos aqueles mísseis e aviões no MUSEU, espero que um dia que esse seja o destino de TODOS!

Anyway, tirando o lado trágico da coisa, foi um dia muito maneiro e rendeu várias fotos legais.

Além de tudo isso ainda fomos ver um jogo da NBA no Madison Square Garden, NY Knicks vs. Sacramento Kings, sensacional o jogo, teve até prorrogação! Mas no final tivemos que ver NY perder por 106 a 102...
Rolou de ir ver também um jogo de hóquei, NY Rangers vs. Pittsburgh Penguins, e dessa vez NY levou a melhor, 3x1! Infelizmente as fotos não ficaram mto legais daí acabei nem publicando.

Almost entering the 5th month already, time for the 5th report!!
After X-Mas and the New Year Andreea and me were off to the USA in a one-month business trip -
two week in Washington, D.C. and two other in New York...really stressful!

The objective was to take some trainings and finally meet our managers, the guys who interviewed us by phone for the jobs. Our direct manager is an australian guy, coming from an albanese family and works in New York, and his boss (the one who interviewed us) is british, from an indian family and works in Washington...so there go the trainees, a brazilian and a romaninan who work in Belgium!

The only museum I visited in DC was the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, JUST AMAZING!! Almost everything about civil and military aviation and space exploration as well, from the Cold War days and the Space Run against the russians until the modern international orbital space stations.
But way "almost" and not "totally" everything?? NO MENTION ABOUT SANTOS DUMONT AND THE 14-BIS, THE REAL FIRST HUMAN FLIGHT!!!
Regrettable...actually the Wright Bros really flown before him, but their "airplane" was practically only a "floater", needed a catapult to take off...Anyway, the museum is AMAZING and is really worth the visit!! Another point: the museum is open seven days a week and the entrance is FREE.

And of course, some nightlife too...I found out in Orkut that a friend of mine is doing his masters in DC, which means, good company for the Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights!! Pics??? Better not...

After DC.....NEW YORK!!! Wonderful city, fast-paced, people everywhere, all the cultures of the world put together in a city...I changed my mind on several points about the american people, not only in NY but in DC too.

The Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in DC was spetacular, but I couldn't help it and went visiting another in NY, this time the Intrepid Air and Space Museum. The Intrepid is a decomissioned carrier, now anchored in the Hudson River and transformed into a museum. Served in WW II (surviving to 4 kamikaze strikes), in Vietnam and the Gulf War.

And for finishing the NY trip, a visit to the UN headquarters. Some facts: the building located in an international area, they remove the flags after 5:30pm (that´s why there are no flags in my picture...), and about worldwide expenses in several issues I got to know some figures (annual expenses in billions of dollars):

- remove landmines ($2);
- eliminate illiteracy ($5);
- build democracy ($2);
- refugee relief ($5);
- stop ozone depletion ($5);
- stop deforestation ($7);
- eliminate nuclear weapons ($7);
- prevent global warming ($8 );
- prevent acid rain ($8 );
- provide clean, safe water ($10);
- stabilize population ($10,5);
- eliminate starvation and malnutrition ($19);
- provide shelter ($21);
- provide health care and AIDS control ($21);
- prevent soil erosion ($27);
- retire developing nations' debt ($30);
- provide clean, safe energy ($50);
- annual world military expenditures.....$780!!!!!!!

That's it, US$ 780.000.000.000,00, SEVEN HUNDRED EIGHTY BILLION DOLLARS EVERY YEAR spent in WEAPONS!!
It's estimated that these figures can overcome ONE TRILLION (US$ 1.000.000.000.000,00) in some years...imagine if all this money were in the hands of organizations that head to the world peace like AIESEC, or if people with our mentality were in command...I was really amazed to see all that weaponry and aircraft in a MUSEUM, really hope that this is the destiny
of all the world´s weaponry!

Anyway, besides this tragic side, it was a very cool day and provided lots of nice pictures.

We also went to Madison Square Garden to see the NBA, NY Knicks vs. Sacramento Kings. Amazing game, went to overtime and everything! But in the end we had to see NY lose against the californians, 106 to 102...
I went there again also to see the NHL, NY Rangers vs. Pittsburgh Penguins, but this time NY did better, 3x1!
Unfortunately the pics weren´t so cool the deserve publishing.
